What you should know about airline passenger rights

Keeping up with airline passenger rights can be difficult. According to the Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR) (SOR/2019-150), Canadians are entitled to certain protections when flying.

These regulations apply to small and large carriers alike such as WestJet, Air Canada, Swoop, Air North, Canada North, and Northwestern Air. These regulations apply to airlines that land and depart from Canada such as American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific and others.

What am I entitled to?

Under s. 18(1) of the APPR, passengers are entitled to alternative arrangements at no cost if an airline causes a delay longer than 48 hours or the flight is cancelled. The exception to this rule is if the delay or cancellation is caused by poor weather conditions, natural disaster or mechanical failure.

What compensation am I entitled to if my flight is delayed or cancelled?

If your flight is cancelled or delayed and the exceptions noted above do not apply to you, you could be compensated between $125-$1,000, depending on whether the carrier is a small or large carrier.

Are there time limits for my refund or compensation?

If your flight is cancelled or delayed and the exceptions noted above do not apply to you, you could be compensated between $125-$1,000, depending on whether the carrier is a small or large carrier.

What if my airline carrier refuses to refund my fare or ticket?

Airline carriers sometimes find ways to refuse refund requests. If an airline carrier refuses to compensate you for a valid request, our team may be able to help. Depending on your situation, we may be able to help you receive compensation of up to $2,400 from your carrier.
